Dr Steve Leonard

Steve is an ecologist with a longstanding interest in the role of fire in ecosystems and the use of fire in conservation management. His current work within the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment, Tasmania, includes fire ecology research and monitoring, providing specialist advice to fire managers, and developing systems for incorporating ecological values into fire management planning.

Steve completed his PhD at the University of Tasmania, investigating interactions of grazing and fire in native grasslands. Prior to taking up his current role, Steve was a Research Fellow at La Trobe University, where he studied the relationships of biota to fire regimes in forests and woodlands, as well as designing a state-wide program for monitoring the ecological effects of planned burning for the Victorian government.
